Yearbook
Yearbook is a student-centered class which creates the annual Preuss yearbook, telling the story of the year through pictures and text. The emphasis in the class is to teach leadership while learning desktop publishing skills, including layout and design, photography, copywriting, proofreading, and business management. Students work in an atmosphere similar to many workplaces, where they are given responsibilities and are expected to complete high-quality work on time. Students are all assigned multiple pages of the book to design, including taking pictures, writing captions, and laying out pages in creative and interesting ways.
To create the yearbook, students use the graphic design program Online Design, which is based on the state-of-the-art software Adobe InDesign, used in professional graphic design. In addition to designing their own pages, students in the class are divided into four different committees: business, copy, design, and photography. Each committee has its own student editor who reports to the editor-in-chief and the teacher. Together, students not only design the yearbook, but they also market the yearbook, sell the yearbook, solicit donors & advertisers for the yearbook, and complete other projects to help learn about all aspects of design and publishing. In June we submit our yearbook to the San Diego County Fair for judging alongside yearbooks from all over the county. This class counts as a G elective and provides many opportunities for all students to develop leadership experience, business knowledge, writing, photography, and design skills.
