Coronavirus Information for The Preuss School Community

THE PREUSS SCHOOL RE-OPENING, 2021-22 ACADEMIC YEAR

FROM: Dr. Helen V. Griffith, Executive Director
Aug. 3, 2021

Dear Parents and Guardians:

WELCOME to the 2021-22 school year! This will be our transitional year to on campus learning and we are excited to greet your scholars on the first day of instruction, Monday, August 9th. As we open the school this year with in-person learning, please review the following policies and procedures that will guide our safe return. Many of the changes that affect our campus this year such as transportation, our school schedule, and the safety protocols were dictated to us as a result of the effects of the pandemic. This letter will outline the changes in transportation, our school schedule, and the COVID safety protocols.

COVID-19 PROTOCOLS

The following COVID protocols have been passed down to us from the Office of the President of the University of California. These policies are designed to manage the continued spread of the COVID-19 virus on all campuses within the University of California system. Since our school is a part of the system, as we are housed and chartered by UC San Diego, these same policies apply to The Preuss School UC San Diego.

Masking

Regardless of vaccination status, the current policy at UC San Diego requires that everyone must wear a mask indoors. This includes all indoor settings including public transportation and school buses, (including any UC vehicle transporting employees or students from different households).

For outdoor settings, face coverings will not be required for fully vaccinated individuals except in crowded environments (300 people or more) such as sporting events, concerts and fairs.

All campus members and visitors should have a mask with them at all times while on campus. If a campus community member or visitor does not have a face covering while on campus, they will be provided with one. University guidance will continue to evolve as Federal, State and County guidance is modified in response to the current health environment.

Screening

All faculty, staff and students who report in person to a UC San Diego site must continue to complete the daily screening tool. This summer we launched our COVID screener for scholars. Therefore, our Preuss students will need to complete the Scholar symptom screener every day prior to the start of the school day. The results are sent to the Preuss School Nurse, Marie Doherty for further review. If your child does not pass the screener and is showing signs of illness, please keep your child at home and contact the school office to report their absence and speak with Nurse Marie for next steps. The Preuss faculty and staff will continue to complete the daily Faculty and staff symptom tracker.

Testing

Faculty, staff and students can take a COVID test on the Preuss campus that will be overseen by Nurse Marie. The schedule for testing will be determined based upon guidance from the UC San Diego COVID management team. Once this is established, Nurse Marie will publish the schedule and expectations for COVID testing.

Vaccination

For the safety and well-being of the entire university community, the University of California has issued a COVID vaccination policy that will require, with few exceptions, that all students, faculty and staff be vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus before they will be allowed on campus, in a facility or office. Individuals will be required to show proof of vaccination, and UC locations are preparing for how they will record vaccination status. For more information on the policies, please see the Vaccination requirement for UC employees and the Vaccination requirement for students.

Though the UC policy goes into effect September 1, 2021, in order to protect the Preuss community, we strongly recommend faculty and staff be vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to entering the Preuss campus on August 9th. The onsite COVID vaccination station is open in the Price Center ballroom next to COVID testing in the Price Center. No appointment is needed and there are appointments currently available all day, every weekday. Further, we are trying to schedule a vaccination clinic on the Preuss campus in the near future. We will post additional information as it becomes available.

TRANSPORTATION

Due to the effects of the pandemic, all transportation providers are experiencing a shortage of drivers, equipment, and the new law mandating all California schools start after 8:30am. Up until May of this year, we had no transportation providers for our scholars. Recently, the San Diego Unified School District agreed to offer the Preuss School a bus quote only if we could change our schedule from 10:00am to 5:00pm. Therefore, during this transition year only, the San Diego Unified Transportation Department will provide busing at a cost to our school of $1.9 million dollars. We are currently in the planning stages of developing self-sustaining transportation for the 2022-23 school year and beyond. We will have additional parent meetings to involve your voice in our planning efforts. This week, the busing schedule will be sent for your scholar(s). Ms. Patty Villanueva has continued to work with SD Unified as our onsite Transportation Lead to ensure that we have a great year.

SCHOOL SCHEDULE

Beginning August 9, 2021 our school day schedule will start at 10:00am and end at 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. There will be no late busses and all activities will happen between the hours of 10:00am to 5:00pm. At the end of each school day, we have integrated protected time for tutoring, homework help, credit recovery, extracurricular activities, mentoring, and clubs, etc. It is the plan to return to the 8:55am to 4:00pm school day for the 2022-23 school year.

MEALS

To support the new school schedule, we have arranged a morning Nutrition Snack upon arrival to school each day. Lunch will be served midday, as usual, and we have added a dinner meal at the end of the day for all scholars. We recognize that proper nutrition fuels the brain and maximizes its ability to expand learning opportunities.

SATURDAY ENRICHMENT ACADEMY

The Saturday Academy will be held during this school year. The dates have been included on the School Calendar link in this message. It is the hope that your scholar will take advantage of the opportunity for additional support with our qualified faculty and tutors. The first day of Saturday Academy is August 21st.

ATHLETICS

We will return to participate in athletics this year according to the most recent CDE and CIF guidelines. Sports teams will practice and participate in games according to the established schedules. More information will be published by our Athletic Director, Coach Fulchiron.

SCHOOL CALENDAR

We have attached our school calendar and hope you save the date for our Back-to-School Night on Thursday, September 16, 2021.

Together, we will achieve great things in this new and extraordinary school year!

Much love and respect!

PHASE 1 REOPENING PLAN UPDATE

FROM: Dr. Helen V. Griffith, Executive Director

Lea este mensaje en Español.

January 21, 2021

We have learned a lot since the COVID-19 pandemic hit and caused us to radically change the way we teach here at The Preuss School UC San Diego. Not least among the lessons has been a deeper appreciation for the advantages to bringing scholars and teachers together for in-person instruction.

That said, we were ready to implement Phase 1 of a plan starting January 22 that would return grade levels to campus for 1 day of instruction. In view of the worsening pandemic, however, and directives from the State Department of Education and the County Office of Education, I have determined that the best interests of The Preuss School community require that we delay implementation of the plan for now, and continue to teach scholars remotely at least through February 2021.

The Preuss School Reopening Plan

In December 2020, Governor Newsom released for California schools, a proposal to launch a reopening plan for grades TK-2* in February, 2021. This plan includes the following four major components:

  • State Funding for schools in addition to the funds previously provided
  • Safety and Mitigation
    1. Testing - Bi-weekly testing in Yellow/Orange counties; Weekly testing in Red/Purple counties
    2. PPE - Distribution, and mandatory masking for all staff and students
    3. Contact Tracing - Onboarding schools in the School Portal for Outbreak Tracking (SPOT) system
    4. Vaccinations - Spring 2021 target to prioritize vaccinations for school staff
  • Oversight and Assistance from state and county agencies, and
  • Transparency and Accountability through the establishment of a dashboard designed to monitor progress statewide for all schools.

*To date, we are awaiting the state’s proposed plan to reopen schools for grades 3 and up.

Our faculty and staff, under the leadership of our administrators, have designed what we believe will be a safe Phase 1 reopening plan that best supports the instruction, culture, and the structures that help to realize the mission and vision of The Preuss School. In short, Phase 1 provided for bringing scholars back onto campus one day a week (Fridays) and one grade-level at a time (that is, all sixth graders one Friday, all ninth graders the next Friday, and so on).

Input for our Phase 1 reopening plan has continued to include all stakeholder groups in order to arrive at the best decision possible. We have continued to follow local, state and federal pronouncements; considered the decisions of other Southern California school districts; and conferred with education professionals, public health experts, the Preuss School’s teaching staff, and parents of Preuss scholars. We have also involved the leadership of the Preuss Board of Directors (and, in particular, the Finance Committee of the Board) in understanding the challenges and implications of various options available to us.

Further, we remain in consultation with UC San Diego partners Robert T. "Chip" Schooley, M.D. (Professor of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health), Cheryl A.M. Anderson, PhD, MPH, MS (Professor and Founding Dean, School of Public Health), Natasha Martin, DPhil (Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health), Robert Neuhard (Executive Director, Strategic Initiatives) and his team, and most recently, the UC San Diego COVID Monitoring Team.

Decision to Remain in Full Remote Learning and Delay January Phase 1 Reopening

Notwithstanding our confidence that our reopening plan can and will, under the right circumstances, be a safe and effective way to bring scholars back to campus, I believe the following factors tip the balance in favor of delaying our Phase 1 reopening originally set to commence on January 22, 2021:

  • The current worsening COVID-19 case count in San Diego County (particularly serious in the communities where most of our scholars live);
  • The fact that San Diego county has been placed in the Purple tier;
  • Mandates from the State of California, Department of Education (CDE) prohibiting new schools from opening in counties that are in the Purple tier;
  • The CDE’s proposed plan to re-open schools, grades TK-2 is suggested to occur in
    February, 2021;
  • Concerns about repeated and sustained on campus exposure to potentially infectious persons; and
  • My desire, and my team’s, to commit to an educational model that we know we can sustain through the end of the Spring semester.

We take very seriously our role in leading an academic community that prides itself on being a model for others to follow with measurable results. We will continue to dedicate significant time and effort to constantly evaluate the implications of this decision and will work to make it possible to bring students back to campus, as soon as it is deemed safe to do so.

With these considerations in mind, our timeline has been adjusted as follows:

  • January 4, 2021: Return from Holiday break & continue Remote Instruction
  • January 4-29, 2021: Monitor State Briefings and Reopening Mandates, and UC San Diego and SDUSD Instructional Reopening Plans
  • February 15-19, 2021: Update The Preuss School Reopening Plan
  • March 5, 2021: Launch Phase 1 Reopening Plan if circumstances and then-current governmental restrictions permit
Thank you for the support of your scholar and The Preuss School community as we have navigated this time of uncertainty. I look forward to any comments you may have about our plan to delay reopening for the spring 2021 semester. We value the opportunity to work with you and your family to make this spring semester a success for the school and its scholars.

FALL 2020 REOPENING PLAN FOR THE PREUSS SCHOOL UC SAN DIEGO

FROM: Dr. Helen V. Griffith, Executive Director & Dr. Matthew Steitz, Principal

July 16, 2020

We hope this memo finds each of you well, safe, and enjoying the summer months. After countless hours of consultation with all stakeholder groups, and in view of the continuing rise of the COVID-19 pandemic, our leadership team has determined that the best interests of the entire Preuss School community requires that we plan to teach scholars remotely in an on-line teaching model for the Fall Semester of 2020. We firmly believe that it is unsafe to bring our Learning Community on campus and have elected to offer distance instruction instead. It is our plan to return to the campus as soon as the local, state, and UC medical officials advise that it is safe.

Our decision took into account feedback from more than 500 Preuss families, our faculty and staff, The Preuss School Board of Directors, EVC Elizabeth Simmons, and the team from the Office of Operational Strategic Initiatives at UC San Diego (also lead for the logistics of the Return to Learn Program).

Further, we were able to gain up-to-date, expert medical recommendations and advice from Dr. Robert "Chip" Schooley, M.D. (Professor, UC San Diego Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health), Dr. Cheryl Anderson, PhD, MPH, MS (UC San Diego Professor and Founding Dean of the School of Public Health), and Dr. Natasha Martin, DPhil (Associate Professor, Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health). It is with this information and feedback that we feel confident in our decision.

This past month, we have been in collaboration with our community partner, The Elementary Institute of Science (EIS) (centrally located at the corner of Market Street and Euclid Avenue, across from the Malcolm X Public Library), in order to negotiate the use of their facility to offer optional in-person Science Labs, tutoring sessions, and UP Advisory meetings. During these optional sessions we will continue to practice all safety precautions that include face masking, small group sessions, extra cleaning, and physical distancing. Faculty can choose to meet at their discretion utilizing the space at the Elementary Institute of Science in order to offer some in-person instruction and extra academic support. In the coming days, it is the goal of our team to continue planning and designing an exemplary remote instructional program that will result in measurable and successful outcomes for our entire Learning Community.

It is our plan to host a series of meetings designed to discuss more of the specifics relative to our Remote Instructional Plan via Zoom sessions. We will send notices once the dates are set.

We appreciate your partnership during this critical time of balancing the health and safety needs alongside a strong, remote instructional model that will be designed to meet the needs of every learner.

The Preuss Promise lives…

PLAN DE REAPERTURA DE OTOÑO 2020 PARA LA ESCUELA PREUSS UC SAN DIEGO

Dra. Helen V. Griffith, Directora Ejecutiva y Dr. Matthew Steitz, Director

Message from Dr. Griffith, Executive Director - Virtual Graduation Ceremony

DATE: May  6, 2020

TO: The Preuss School UC San Diego Family of Learners

FROM: Dr. Helen V. Griffith, Executive Director

RE: COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY - JUNE, 2020

Commencement is the most important ceremony of the year for any high school because it is one of the most momentous events of a person’s lifetime. When graduates walk across a stage in front of their family and friends, peers, and faculty to accept their high school diplomas, it marks the culmination of years of preparation, effort and dedication. It is a day that everyone looks forward to: students, parents, faculty and administrators. This time-honored recognition of achievement marks the end of one stage of life and heralds the beginning of a new one.

It was our sincere hope to be able to continue our most celebrated tradition in person at the end of the academic year, but unfortunately, that is not possible due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s commencement requires an innovative solution that balances recognition of accomplishment with concerns for public health and safety.

Therefore, in alignment with the graduates of UC San Diego’s undergraduate and graduate programs, The Preuss School will also recognize our graduating Class of 2020 with a virtual ceremony. Our traditional commencement celebration will be held online allowing for a larger virtual audience of all who wish to log on.

The Preuss School celebration will take place as originally scheduled, on Thursday, June 18, at 4:00 pm. This virtual ceremony will include a commencement address from Dr. Mary Daly, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, recognition of the individual graduates, the conferral of diplomas, and the traditional tassel turn.

We look forward to celebrating the amazing accomplishments of the Class of 2020 and will continue to support the next phase of their journey. If you have questions, please feel free to reach out to our Senior Advisory faculty or any of our administrative staff.

Please be well and safe,
Dr. Helen V. Griffith
Executive Director
The Preuss School UC San Diego

Mensaje de la Dra. Griffith, Directora Ejecutiva - Ceremonia de Graduación Virtual

FECHA: 6 de mayo de 2020

PARA: La Familia de Estudiantes de la Escuela Preuss UC San Diego

DE: Dra. Helen V. Griffith, Directora Ejecutiva

Dr. Helen V. Griffith

Update from Dr. Griffith, Executive Director - March 25, 2020

To our Preuss Scholars and Families:

Thank you for your support and the move to Remote Learning as we have aligned with the plans statewide to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. I hope you and your family have remained safe and well during this time. I am writing to share the plans for the remainder of the school year. We are thankful that your scholars have engaged in the online lessons and the hard copy lessons that were assigned to them beginning March 16 through March 27. We appreciate your support in making sure that teaching and learning has continued.

Therefore, in light of the heightened COVID-19 cases throughout the county, I am reaching out to share our plans for the remainder of the school year. I am pleased that our plan will allow all students to successfully complete the current academic year, offsite-- or in the event that public health officials approve, we will return to in-classroom instruction. We are following the standard set on the main campus of UC San Diego which will  implement online instruction throughout the Spring Quarter of this year.  As it stands, we plan to employ distance learning and online instruction through June 17, 2020 unless otherwise advised by our San Diego County Public Health Officials.

Immediately after spring break, on April 6, The Preuss School UC San Diego will continue to offer online instruction at home as well as increase the level of engagement and interaction with all of our highly skilled faculty.  Our Faculty will continue to work remotely with our scholars as other colleagues join them in offering the online instruction to their students via Google Classroom.  In order to fully implement the online learning, we need to ensure all scholars have access to a computer and a reliable internet connection.   For this reason we need all parents to contact Dr. Jacquie Azize-Brewer if your child does not have access to a computer and/or access to the internet at home.  Please email her immediately and provide your best contact phone number at: preussvolunteer@ucsd.edu.  Once you email her,  Dr. Azize-Brewer, will contact you and set an appointment for you to pick up a computer from The Preuss School to ensure your child has access to online learning for the remainder of this semester. Please reach out immediately.

We have developed a modified daily A/B schedule, Monday through Friday where your scholars will have access to their teachers during the school day. The schedule has been designed to allow for instructional time with faculty, online tutoring, online group study sessions, and individual learning time. We will still facilitate grading of assignments, feedback from instructors, AP instruction and assessments, tutoring, mentoring, online exams, and possibly online gatherings of school clubs as we move later in the school year. This proposed schedule will phase in after Spring break (April 6) and will be fully implemented once all of our scholars have received a computer and we have assisted in securing online access. The detailed schedule, once finalized will be published on our website and emailed to parents and scholars on April 6. Until then, please continue with the online assignments posted on our website and those listed in Google Classroom where applicable.

Here is the proposed schedule for the remainder of the year:

Spring Break Begins

Monday

March 30

Spring Break Ends

Friday

April 3

Remote Learning Continues

Monday

April 6

Last day of Remote Learning

Wednesday

June 17

Teaching and learning will continue remotely, meaning students will need to access the website or their Google Classroom for the remainder of this semester at www.preuss.ucsd.edu.  We will work with all families to ensure you have internet access and a device, therefore please contact us immediately.

We will continue to place assignments and updates on our webpage under the COVID-19 link and will continue to send updates via Parent Square. Please closely monitor your email and text messages so you can remain aware of any changes to our status.  You can expect to receive our Remote Instruction Schedule prior to April 6 which will also outline our expectations for distance teaching and learning. Further, counseling support for our scholars will remain available from members of the Wellness Team which includes:  School Counselors, Family Specialists, and our School Psychologist.  For more information, please click here.

As a reminder, if you or your child has respiratory symptoms and fever of >100 F / >37.8 C (lowered from 100.4 F), you should contact your health care professional. It is important to note: during this time scholars should stay home and not frequent malls, restaurants, or other public places as the school closure is being mandated in an effort to slow and stop the spread of the virus in San Diego County.

PLEASE KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE UNTIL THE COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT HAS LIFTED ALL WARNINGS.

San Diego Unified Food Services will continue to provide free Breakfast and Lunch during the time of school shut down. All locations are posted at www.sandi.net.  Our Administrative Team will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary. If you have questions about these topics, please email your child’s teacher or questions@preuss.ucsd.edu.

Please Be Well,

March 13, 2020: To Our Preuss Scholars and Families:

As we continue to closely monitor the 2019 novel coronavirus (now named COVID-19) situation, we are aligning with the directives of the San Diego Unified School District, the County Health Department, and the Chancellor of UC San Diego to take actions to slow the spread of COVID-19. Therefore, The Preuss School will move to remote learning effective, Monday, March 16 to Friday, March 27, and scholars will not be on campus. Here is the specific schedule below:

  • Remote learning begins Monday, March 16
  • Remote learning ends Friday, March 27
  • Spring Break begins Monday, March 30
  • Spring Break ends Friday, April 3
  • Return to school Monday, April 6

Teaching and learning will continue remotely, meaning students must complete assignments from home and not come to campus. If students fail to complete the work, they will be in jeopardy of failing classes.  Therefore, we strongly urge our scholars to take full advantage of the learning and complete all assignments. Today, all scholars will be given the assignment packages and that same work will be accessible from the Preuss website at www.preuss.ucsd.edu under the Campus Life link to Remote Learning Plans. Some teachers have the ability to send assignments via Google Classroom and those links will be posted on our website under the Remote Learning Plans link.  For assistance with assignments, teachers will be available to scholars during the school day via email or Google Classroom.  All assignments must be completed before they return to school on Monday, April 6, 2020.

We will place regular updates on our webpage under the COVID-19 link and will continue to send updates via Parent Square.  Please closely monitor your email and text messages so you can remain aware of any changes to our status.

San Diego Unified Food Services will set up at various community locations and serve free Breakfast and Lunch during the time of school shut down. We will post the locations, serving times and dates on the website as they become available.

Our Administrative Team will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary. If you have questions about these topics, please email your child’s teacher or questions@preuss.ucsd.edu.

Hello Parents and Guardians:

We are taking the following extra protocols at The Preuss School to help minimize the spread of germs and bacteria and manage all issues related to COVID-19.

  1. The custodians have been instructed to disinfect door handles, desk, and chair tops on a daily basis.
  2. We have given every classroom anti-bacterial wipes to use daily, along with their scholars, to wipe down surfaces after each class.
  3. Extra boxes of facial tissue have been distributed to every classroom so scholars can sneeze and cough into the tissue at all times.
  4. We are keeping the hand sanitizing stations full that are placed around the school. This includes having extra hand sanitizer in each classroom.
  5. The school nurse is making classroom presentations to our scholars on how to maintain good hygiene at all times in order to minimize getting sick and the spread of illness.
  6.  The school nurse is screening our scholars who come to her office using the Center for Disease Control (CDC) protocols which look for a fever greater than 100 degrees along with cold and flu-like symptoms.
  7. We are a part of the University’s Emergency Operations Center Team and following the campus-wide directions to manage the issues related to COVID-19.
  8. We are making instructional packages by grade and course in the event of a mandatory school shut down. The County Public Health Department  and/or the UC San Diego Chancellor are responsible for making the final decision on school closure.

Please feel free to reach out to our office if you have additional questions.
We will keep all families updated with the latest details.

Best Always,
Dr. Helen V. Griffith

Mensaje del Dr. Griffith sobre COVID-19

Hola Padres y Tutores:

Dr. Helen V. Griffith
