Girls in STEM
The Girls in STEM Conference is designed to encourage girls to pursue education and careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) – fields where women, particularly minority women, are underrepresented.
Created and hosted by female members of The Preuss School’s robotics team – the Midnight Mechanics – the conference is exclusively for female middle school students at Preuss, with the goal of expanding the conference to include other female middle school students in the future.
Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015
9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Conference activities will include:
- A robotics workshop where attendees will use software to design a pendant that will be printed on a 3-D printer
- A “Body Positive” talk given by Preuss peer counselors
- Speed Mentoring – female STEM professionals will meet with middle school students for rotating 10-minute sessions, serving as role models and sources of inspiration. Participating organizations include: UC San Diego; San Diego State University; County of San Diego; Association of Women in Science-San Diego; The Scripps Research Institute; Qualcomm; Northrop Grumman; IT Tech Pros; NAT Diagnostics, Inc.; BE WiSE (Better Education for Women in Science and Engineering); and Pacific Ridge School.
