Volunteer tutors and mentors play a significant role in our students’ success. Learn more about each of these opportunities below.
Each quarter we look for dedicated UC San Diego students, parents, community members, retired teachers and anyone else interested in volunteering as a tutor. It’s a great and easy way to give back and meet some wonderful students.
We have classes from 6th – 12th grade, which meet from 9am to 4pm. Tutor positions are available in all classroom subjects such as math, science, history, english, spanish, music and fine arts. Volunteer tutors usually come in for an hour and a half, twice a week (Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday).

Members of the community—faculty included—serve as mentors for Preuss students. Mentors act in a capacity of role model, teacher and friend. Often the exchange between the pair is educational for both, as each person brings his or her own unique experiences to the exchanges.
Quarterly meetings are planned and activities for the mentor/mentee pairs are also scheduled throughout the year. A mentor is paired with one student, and they meet on the school's campus either during lunch or the Advisory period at least once a week for 30 minutes.
