Stephanie Garcia

Juliana Biersbach from The Preuss Schoo, UCSD

My name is Stephanie Garcia, and I have been teaching high school English at The Preuss School UC San Diego since 2004.  I earned my Bachelor’s degree in English from California State University, San Bernardino, and my Master’s in Rhetoric Language and Writing from California State University, Fullerton. Upon my graduation from Fullerton, I taught Freshman English at Point Loma Nazarene University for seven years. It was there I became involved with an outreach program that introduced college level English to underrepresented students from Lincoln High School.  My experience with that program convinced me that I should listen to my parents and make a bigger impact with my life by teaching reading and writing skills to first generation college bound students (like me!).

I enrolled in the Master’s of Education program at the University of California San Diego, and in a serendipitous move,  my advisor contacted then principal Dr. Alvarez from a school I had never heard of called “Preuss” to hire me as an intern in 2003. I have been here ever since. The Preuss mission is my mission, and my personal experience of being a first generation college student fuels my passion to ensure that every student who enters my classroom leaves with the critical reading, thinking, and writing skills they need to thrive in college, and to become lifelong readers and critical thinkers.

It is my privilege and honor to have taught at Preuss, a school that transforms lives and sends some pretty amazing humans out into the world, for twenty years now.

Outside of school, I enjoy taking long walks while listening to audio books, crocheting, watching TV,  cooking for my family, and engaging in all things The Beatles. I also love seeing  alumni and hearing all about the lives they have created for themselves post-graduation.
