Jan Gabay

Jan Gabay's imageJan Gabay is the AP English teacher for grades 11 and 12, the Service Learning teacher with Principal Dr. Alvarez, and she is the Staff Developer for the faculty. Her role and philosophy as a teacher is best captured in the line, "I dwell in possibility" by American poet, Emily Dickinson. As an educator for several decades with lots of experience teaching secondary students, Ms. Gabay has as her goal that her juniors and seniors fully experience and "dwell" in all possibilities as readers, speakers, and writers. Ms. Gabay earned a B.A. degree with high honors in English and drama, and she holds a Master's Degree in English, Emphasis in Writing. She continues post-graduate university work on an ongoing basis in education and literature. Along with a lifetime California secondary teaching credential, she also possesses a Specialist Credential in Gifted Education. In the early 1990's, Ms. Gabay was recognized by President George Bush at a White House ceremony where she was honored as U.S. National Teacher of the Year. Later, in 1995, she was among the first group of educators to qualify as a National Board Certified Teacher in English Language Arts and was again recognized at the White House by President Bill Clinton. Her many additional honors and awards serve to fuel her desire to keep abreast of the latest research and apply these best practices to teaching composition and literature. She is originally from the aloha state of Hawaii, but she has been a Californian most of her life. Ms. Gabay enjoys being at the beach, she loves to read and to write, and she periodically volunteers with various community arts organizations. She also has a special affection for pet bunnies. Throughout her adult life as an educator, she has been especially inspired and motivated by her own students year after year!
