TUTORS
Every quarter we look for dedicated UCSD students who want to volunteer as tutors. It’s a great and easy way to give back, meet some wonderful students and take a break from studying. We have classes from 6th grade to 12th grade and the classes meet from 9am to 4pm. We have openings for tutors in every subject (Math, Science, History, English, Spanish, Art). Volunteer tutors usually come in for an hour and a half, twice a week (Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday).
To become a volunteer tutor please download the volunteer application and bring it in to one of the orientations or deliver/mail it to the school. Volunteers will be asked to provide a proof of TB test result that is no more than 60 days old. If you have it, bring a copy of the results to the orientation. Alternatively, volunteers may get their TB screening down with our school nurse for free. Additionally, you will need to provide a copy of a government issued photo identification (driver’s license, passport, military identification, US or other government identification). (Student identification cards do no satisfy this requirement.)
Once the application and additional materials are received, it will be processed.
This includes a background check against the Megan’s Law Database. Finally,
attend an orientation, at which time initial scheduling will be done.

MENTORS

Members of the community - faculty included - serve as mentors for Preuss students.
Quarterly meetings are planned and activities for the mentor/mentee pairs are
also scheduled throughout the year. Mentors act in a capacity of role model,
teacher, and friend. Often the exchange between the pair is educational for
both, as both bring their own unique experiences to their exchanges. A mentor
is paired with one student, and they meet on the school's campus either during
lunch or the Advisory period at least once a week for 30 minutes.
If you are interested in becoming a Mentor please download the Mentor application.
The completed application, together with a copy of a government issued photo
identification (driver’s license, passport, military identification, US
or other government identification) and a copy of recent (less than 60 days
old) tuberculosis test results, can be delivered or mailed to the school. After
the application has been received and reviewed, we will contact you regarding
the procedures involved with the mandatory California Department of Justice
and Federal Bureau of Investigation criminal back ground checks, which includes
finger printing.
