Phil Ensberg teaches English for grade 8, Visual Arts for grade 6, and Yearbook to grades 9-12. He believes in teaching students as he would want to be taught. He hopes that all students master the curriculum in his classroom, but also believes in developing the character of each student in preparation for a life of community involvement and responsible participation in our democratic society. Mr. Ensberg holds a B.A. in English Literature, an M.A. in Teaching and Learning and is currently working on his Ed.D. in Teaching and Learning at UCSD. Along with a Single Subject Teaching Credential in English, he is certified to teach Social Studies and Art in California. In 2005, Phil was recognized as the Middle School Teacher of the Year for the San Diego Unified School District--the first charter school teacher to receive the award--and was a finalist for the San Diego County Teacher of the Year Award. In 2006 he received the National Teacher/Administrator Award from the Freedom's Foundation in Valley Forge. He was born in Connecticut and lived in New Jersey, but has been a resident of California since 1975, and considers himself a Californian. Mr. Ensberg is married with two small children. His hobbies including spending time with his wife and family, singing and songwriting, writing poetry, reading, drawing, golfing, and drinking Starbucks coffee. He is inspired every day by the amazing commitment, diligence, intelligence and resourcefulness of his amazing students at The Preuss School.
